PiS leads in regional elections

According to an exit poll by Ipsos, main opposition party Law and Justice (PiS) secured 31.5 percent of the votes in elections to voivodship councils, which took place in Poland on Sunday.

Coalition leader Civic Platform (PO) got 27.3 percent of votes countrywide and its partner the Polish People?s Party got 17 percent. Only 8.8 percent of the votes were for the Democratic Left Alliance.

PiS won the majority in eight voivodship councils, leaving the remaining eight to its rival, PO.

Turnout in the elections, which also involved choosing mayors, city or municipality councils and district councils in some cities, was 46.4 percent.

In Warsaw, there will most likely be a second round of voting for the mayor. PO?s Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, who has already served two four-year terms, has most likely secured the suport of 48.8 percent of the voters, with the PiS candidate, Jacek Sasin, in second place with 26 percent.
