Power restriction due to a heat wave in Poland

As of Monday morning Poland is under a Level 20 power restriction from 10:00 to 17:00, limiting power consumption by firms consuming more than 300kW to a barebones minimum necessary for maintaining safety of people and equipment. The limitations do not apply to sensitive institutions such as hospitals.

Polish power grid operator (PSE) had requested reduced mid-day consumption after Poland’s power generation shortfall increased dramatically last Thursday following unplanned stoppages of a number of power blocks, resulting from continued heat wave.

PSE announced today a Level 19 power restriction from 10:00 to 17:00, a Level 17 from 17:00 to 22:00 and a Level 11 power restriction from 22:00 to 10:00 of the next day. That means lower restriction than yesterday.

Poland has 10 emergency power supply levels. The government may extend power reductions to August 30, deputy PM Janusz Piechocinski told reporters of plans for the Tuesday cabinet sitting.

To remedy the situation, the government has increased power imports from neighbouring countries and minimized exports as much as possible, Piechocinski said.

Plans also include releasing water from reservoirs to improve power plant cooling and force delays in some regularly scheduled power station maintenance shutdowns, PM Ewa Kopacz said earlier on Monday following a meeting of the nation’s crisis management team.
