Drought-related losses in Poland

Poland suffered drought-related losses of some PLN 550 million as about 800,000 hectares of agricultural land have been affected so far, Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki said on Wednesday. He also said that the government will discuss the scope of state support for farmers at its next sitting. The minister said on Monday that the money the farmers might get will not be kind of indemnity but a support. He mentioned also about the proposal he signed to the EU Commission about the help for farmers with the losses caused by draught.
Polish farmers want the government to declare a state of drought nationwide, which would open the way for various forms of state support for farmers. This support could encompass lower local taxes, social premiums as well as state subsidies for re-launching production after drought.
