Increasing minimum wages in Poland

The gross minimum wage in Poland in 2015 will raise to 1 731 PLN. This is an increase of 51 PLN on the 2014 rate of 1 680 PLN. Minimum wage in Poland, set uniformly across the regions, has increased substantially over last years and especially after Poland?s accession to EU in 2004.

At present Poland is one of the countries with the highest minimum wage among New Member States. Moreover, following recommendations of the International Labour Organisation there are plans, supported particularly by Polish trade unions, to further increase the minimum wage in Poland to 50% of an average wage rate.

The average salary in the Polish corporate sector amounted to PLN 3 976,8 in April, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) said on Monday, 20th of May. In year-on-year terms it grew by 3.8 percent and at the same time it declined by 1.0 percent month-on-month.

GUS also said that employment in the corporate sector grew by 0.7 percent y/y and amounted to 5 514 500 in April. It remained unchanged compared to March. Analysts surveyed by PAP saw employment growing by 0.8 percent y/y and by 0.1 percent m/m.

The data show that the situation on the labor market continues to improve, BZ WBK economists wrote in an e-mailed comment. They expect the trend to continue in the coming months.
