Poland to increase military spending

The Polish government is working on an act increasing military spending to 2 percent of the GDP, Dziennik Gazeta Prawna reports. This means, that the army will be able to spend PLN 800 million more every year.

The new law gives more flexibility to the budget- the percentage is calculated as an average over the years, so the authorities can spend more when needed. Now the state is obldged to spend 1.95 percent of the GDP every year no matter of the needs.

The Polish Ministry of Defense does not wish to spend the money on a fixed program, but includes it in the army modernization budget. ?We want to increase the mobility and the striking distance of our forces?, explains Czesław Mroczek, deputy head of the Ministry of Defence.

Bronisław Komorowski, the Polish president, supports the idea but wishes to provide the army with newest technology (drones, cyber weapons and satellite espionage). The ministry, however, would rather focus on classical equipment.
