Sejm restricts social insurance law

On Thursday, the Sejm voted in favour of a bill imposing on employers the obligation to pay social insurance premiums on contracts of mandate for less then minimum wage. The new restrictions will become binding on 1 January 2016, as the Civic Platform and the Polish People?s Party rejected the Democratic Left Alliance?s motion to move the date to 1 January of 2015.

The bill also introduces social insurance premiums on wages of supervisory board members, with that provision entering into force in January of next year. The Law and Justice?s Adam Abramowicz argued the current system of social insurance was unfair, as it placed a heavy burden on business owners regardless of their actual income and forced many employees to enter the grey zone or leave Poland altogether.

Nevertheless, the government bill was passed with an overwhelming majority of 418 votes in favour to just 8 against, with 2 MPs abstaining.
